Hidden away off the tip of remote South East Sulawesi Indonesia, buton island and its largest yown, Baubau
, are in many ways a microcosm of much that is interesting and beautyful about Sulawesi and Indonesia. As I standing on top of the hill which dominates the
town of Baubau, I find my self within the remnants of a most impressive fort. The walls and gun emplacements (many with real Dutch cannons still bearing the logo of the Dutch East India Company - the VOC) strech for 3 kilometres. For centuries the fort was the guardian of the extraordinarily
strategic position of Baubau right on the shouthernmost tip of the eastern arm Sulawesi.
